The Statement of Tom Freeman for – A Retrospective Exhibition – April 7th @ thegallery8680
A JOURNEY BEGINS.........
At age 8, I narrowly escaped death when an open wall heater
caused my clothes to catch fire. Prayers and a mother's faith
saved my life.
I was bedridden for over 6 months with no physical activity, but
my mind was active and full of imagination from reading adventure
books, such as Tom Sawyer, Call of the Wild, and Poe mysteries.
Drawing was a favorite pastime before this accident, and now....
there was more time to draw.
I share this story because:........WHY I Paint, and......... WHAT I Paint
began here. Just like the tales of Jack London and Mark Twain, my
art is based on life experienced, travels and imagination!
I have worked at this art “thing” since my childhood. This Retrospective Exhibition contains some of my early efforts up to recent work. I hope you share my love of ART and enjoy viewing my paintings.
My paintings are realistic and often Impressionistic of semi- abstraction. They are inspired by travels and from observations of what I consider interesting and beautiful.
Although “SELF TAUGHT” my art education is based on a lifetime of study and from the assistance of many individuals.
My wife Gay; she is my greatest fan, critic and motivator. A tall order.
David Leffel; Art Student League of New York: teacher and modern master. He taught me how to think like an artist.
Matt Lamb; one of the most controversial self-taught artist in the world. His expressive painting and quest for love and peace are inspiring.
Mary Tomas; artist and gallery owner, my good friend and mentor.
And thanks to Rembrandt, Turner, Whistler, Hopper, Rothko and others.
I want to thank my collectors:
