Art, for me, is all about perspective – how one views a sunset, a fall day, a close- up of a beautiful flower or a topic that concerns all of us …such as guns in America. I am extremely concerned about the proliferation of guns, especially military-style weapons, in this country and the resulting tragedies that occur as a result of these guns. I wanted to capture that deep concern in a painting. The challenge was how do I convey that darkness in such a way as to still be beautiful or, at least, interesting to look at over and over again. I chose to depict this topic through a forest (proliferation) of what at first appear to be trees, but upon closer inspection, are obviously weapons. My hope and optimism that in America we can still get this right, is conveyed through the lightness at the end of the path.
